Germany as depositary of multilateral treaties

Article

The Federal Republic of Germany is the depositary of more than 20 multilateral treaties. The wording of these treaties, status lists as well as declarations by contracting parties have been made available on this website since September 2011 and can now be found also in English.

The Federal Republic of Germany is the depositary of the multilateral treaties listed below.

It is common practice for multilateral treaties to specify a depositary, on which certain tasks are incumbent.

The depositary keeps the original of the treaty in a safe place and notifies the other contracting parties of events such as the entry into force of the treaties and any amendments made to it. One of the depositary’s main tasks is to transmit information on ratifications, accessions, acceptances, declarations and reservations made by individual contracting parties. It thus keeps all contracting parties up to date on the status of the treaty.
